Autumn Capsule Wardrobe: The 8 Pieces We Build Ours Around

Oui Steel Grey Chunky Knit Sequin Check Cardigan - Olivia Grace Fashion

An autumn capsule wardrobe works when every piece shares a palette and a weight, so almost everything goes with almost everything else. That is the whole trick. Eight pieces will take you from a warm morning to a cold evening, as long as you choose them to layer rather than to stand alone.

We rebuild ours in the shop every year, and the same shapes come back each time. A knit that can be worn open. Trousers in two different weights. One scarf that does more work than it has any right to.

The short version:

  • Pick one palette and stay inside it. Grey, beige, warm brown and denim cover most of a season.
  • Two trouser weights beat four. Something heavier, something softer.
  • A cardigan you can wear open counts as a jacket in September.
  • Thin layers you can take off indoors are worth more than one thick coat.
  • Buy the scarf. Nothing else changes an outfit as quickly.

What goes in an autumn capsule wardrobe

Most wardrobes struggle in autumn for one reason. They are built for two temperatures, and September has about five.

So we start with the palette rather than the pieces. Grey, beige, warm brown and denim sit together without anyone having to think about it, and once the colours agree, the combinations look after themselves. Add a single accent if you want one, and keep it to a single accent.

Weight is the second decision. A capsule needs one piece you are happy to wear on its own on a mild day, one that goes over the top, and one that goes over that. What to wear in autumn is really a question about how many layers you can take off before the outfit stops working.

The eight pieces we build ours around

These are in the shop this season, and they show the shape of it more usefully than a list of categories would.

  • A chunky check cardigan in steel grey, worn open over nearly everything else here.
  • A ribbed knit jacket in light beige melange. The collar comes off, which quietly makes it two jackets.
  • A two-in-one jumper, which settles the layering question inside a single piece.
  • Brown and cream stripes on a soft top, for mornings that turn warm by eleven.
  • Pull-on trousers in whitecap grey, cut to be comfortable without reading as casual.
  • Coated black trousers, which look considerably smarter than denim after five.
  • Blue jeans in a shape that holds. Every capsule needs one honest pair.
  • Last, a birch beige scarf. This is the piece that pulls the other seven together.

If you only took two of them, take the cardigan and the scarf. The cardigan does a jacket's job without a jacket's formality, and the scarf changes how the other six look for very little effort.

Most of these are Oui, with Red Button and Mac covering the trousers. If you want to see how the season looks as a whole collection, Oui show it in full on their own site.

How we layer them when the weather cannot decide

Layering for autumn comes down to three thicknesses rather than three garments. A base you are happy to be seen in on its own, something with sleeves over it, and something warmer you can carry until you need it.

Transitional dressing works the same way in the shop as it does at home. We put the thinnest thing on first and build up until it looks finished, instead of starting with a coat and hoping the rest falls into place.

  • Striped top, cardigan open over it, blue jeans. That is a September Saturday.
  • Two-in-one jumper with the coated trousers, scarf knotted at the throat. Dinner, without changing.
  • Knit jacket with the collar on, pull-on trousers underneath, for a cold start that will not last past lunch.
  • All three work with a flat boot, which is what most of it gets worn with anyway.

Knowing how to layer clothes for autumn is mostly knowing what to take off. Anything you cannot remove indoors without the whole outfit changing is doing too much work.

Come and try a few things on

A transitional wardrobe is far easier to judge with the pieces in front of you. Weight and drape decide whether a knit layers well or sits like a brick, and neither of them photographs.

Our knitwear, trousers and new season pieces are all in the shop in Wetherby. Bring the boots you actually wear, and we will put a few combinations together with you. Ring us on 01937 585429 if you would like anything set aside before you travel.

Frequently asked questions

What is an autumn capsule wardrobe?

A small set of pieces chosen so they work together rather than separately. The point is not owning less for its own sake. It is that a shared palette and a sensible range of weights mean almost any two things you pick will go, which removes most of the decision from getting dressed. In practice that is around eight pieces for autumn, covering three thicknesses so you can add and remove layers as the day changes. Shoes and a coat sit outside the count, since they tend to be chosen separately.

How many pieces should be in an autumn capsule wardrobe?

Eight is a realistic number for one season, and it is the number we build ours around. Fewer than six and you start repeating outfits in a way you notice. More than ten and the discipline that makes a capsule work quietly disappears. What matters far more than the count is the spread. Two trouser weights, two things that layer over a top, one top you can wear alone, and one scarf will stretch further than ten pieces that all do the same job at the same temperature.

Which colours work best for a capsule wardrobe in autumn?

Grey, beige, warm brown and denim blue are the four we keep coming back to, because every one of them goes with the other three. That gives you a base where nothing clashes and you never have to plan around a colour. Add one accent if you want the set to feel like yours rather than a uniform, and keep it to one. A single scarf in a colour you love will do that job better than three garments trying to do it at once.

What should I wear between summer and autumn?

Thin layers rather than one heavy thing. The difficulty with early autumn is that a single day can hold two seasons in it, so the outfit has to change without you going home. A top you are happy to be seen in on its own, a cardigan or knit jacket over it, and trousers in a fabric that suits both ends of the day will handle almost anything September produces. Choose layers you can take off indoors without the outfit falling apart, and carry the warmest one rather than wearing it.

Can you help me put one together in the shop?

Yes, and it is one of the nicer things we do. Knitwear in particular is difficult to judge online, because weight and drape decide whether a piece layers well and neither shows in a photograph. Come to the Wetherby shop and we will pull a few combinations together with you, working from what you already own rather than starting again. Bring the boots or shoes you actually wear with this sort of thing. There is no obligation to buy, and you can ring us on 01937 585429 to have pieces set aside first.
