Emme by Marella for autumn: the bordeaux shirt dress and what to wear with it

Emme EMMAFONE bordeaux red printed viscose twill shirt dress - Olivia Grace Fashion

Gold horse bits, ropes and chains are printed across a deep bordeaux on the new shirt dress from Emme by Marella, and it is the dress we would choose for almost every lunch this month. A tie belt pulls it in at the waist, and the skirt falls full and soft to a midi length.

Three more Emme pieces sit alongside it: a navy satin shirt with a ruffle down the front, a lilac jumper scattered with tiny sequins, and an argyle knit in cream and charcoal.

At a glance:

  • The shirt dress is viscose twill in bordeaux, printed in white, navy and gold, with long sleeves and buttoned cuffs.
  • The navy satin shirt has a soft V neck and a cascading ruffle, and the lilac jumper is a slim rib with sequins through it.
  • The argyle jumper is merino and lurex chenille, with charcoal diamonds and loose ties hanging at the hem.

How to wear a burgundy shirt dress in autumn

With tan knee-high boots and a camel coat, this dress is ready for an autumn lunch. Keep the belt tied when you wear the coat open, so the waist still shows.

The viscose twill has a fluid drape and a soft sheen, which is what makes the skirt swing as you walk. Long sleeves finish in buttoned cuffs, so on a cool October day you may not need a layer at all. The pointed collar looks lovely with a fine gold chain at the neck.

For a winter wedding or a Christmas gathering, swap the boots for navy court shoes. They pick up the navy in the print.

What colours go with burgundy?

Navy, gold, camel and chocolate all sit beautifully with burgundy. The dress print already carries the first two.

Emme's navy satin shirt brings that colour into separates. A ruffle cascades from a soft V neck down the placket, and the satin has a little stretch, so it stays comfortable from the office to dinner. Tuck it into wide navy trousers and add a slim gold belt for the theatre.

A lilac sequin jumper for the office

Small sequins on an easy shape are the way in. Emme's lilac jumper has tiny ones scattered through a close rib, so it catches the light as you move.

Three-quarter sleeves and a slim fit mean it sits smoothly under a jacket. Wear it with ivory straight-leg trousers for a day in the office, and add a pale grey coat for lunch out. Lilac and grey together are a favourite of ours for autumn.

Emme by Marella knitwear for weekends

Big charcoal diamonds cross a cream ground on Emme's argyle jumper, each one edged in chunky contrast stitching, with loose ties hanging from the points at the hem. The yarn is merino and lurex chenille, soft to wear with a subtle glint.

We would wear it with dark indigo jeans and white trainers on a Saturday, then switch to ankle boots for Christmas week.

How do you wear a shirt dress in autumn?

Choose a shirt dress with long sleeves in a fabric that drapes, such as viscose twill, and tie the belt to show the waist. Knee-high boots in tan or brown cover the leg below a midi hem, and a camel coat worn open finishes the look. For an occasion, swap the boots for court shoes in a colour from the print, and add a fine gold necklace at the collar.

What colours go with burgundy?

Navy, gold, camel and chocolate brown all sit well with burgundy. Navy keeps it smart, gold adds warmth for evenings, and camel or tan accessories make it easy for daytime. Cream and soft grey work too, especially in knitwear. With a printed burgundy dress, pick a colour from the print for your shoes or bag, and the outfit hangs together without effort.

Can you wear a satin shirt in the daytime?

Yes. A satin shirt looks polished in daylight when you wear it with easy pieces. Emme's navy satin shirt has a soft V neck and a ruffle down the placket, and a little stretch keeps it comfortable all day. Tuck it into cream tailored trousers for the office, or wear it with dark jeans and loafers for lunch in town. On colder days, put a fine V-neck knit over the top so the ruffle still shows, with the buttoned cuffs peeping out below.
